Arcing ensures that the drum and shoe are separated until brake is applied, then allowing full contact between the shoe and the drum. Drum brakes do not expand evenly in a circle, so pre arc, shoe with pads will NEVER fit drums correctly due to the fact that when brakes are applied the shoes are not the same SHAPE or SIZE of the drum. Sugar performance shoes are the only shoes on the market that come pre arced to a Paughco style mechanical rear drum. They are cut out of the box to expand into round when brakes are applied. While they will fit in existing Paughco drums in shape, there are variations in manufacturer and age or drum that may require you to resize your shoes manually. Arcing shoes to your specific drum will always result in the best stopping power.
